Madekwe was born in South London, England into an ethnically diverse family. She's English, and her father was Nigerian. She went to The Brit School when she was fourteen years old. She attended The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London which she graduated with a BA in acting. During her time at the academy, she performed in several performances on stage, such as the King Henry V playing Princess Katherine as well as Wuthering Heights portraying Catherine Earnshaw.
Madekwe began her acting career in the film Storm Damage. The actress has been an actor on Teachers Doctors Casualty Drop Dead Gorgeous. A couple of her credits on stage are Little Sweet Thing (by Roy Williams) and Flight Path (by David Watson).
Madekwe's US debut was in 2009 with The drama The Beautiful Life. The series aired only two episodes before it was ended on The CW. In February of 2011 she was cast in the role of Ashley Davenport in the ABC drama series Revenge. In May of 2013, it was announced that Madekwe, who had been a series regular in the two previous seasons, was to leave the series following a guest appearance in the premier episode of the new season. She starred as Tituba in the television series Salem between 2014 and 2016. Madekwe, her longtime partner, Iddo, married Madekwe in June of 2012. Both have appeared in Secret Diary of a Call Girl. They also starred as a couple in Salem.

Ashley Leggat is a Gemini-nominated actor who was raised by a big family. Her parents were Roy and Patty Leggat.
